kity, an egyptian dancer of the 1950s

Katie was a celebrated dancer known for her delicate, playful and subtle style. Born in Alexandria, in northern Egypt, she was affectionately known as Kitty and had Greek and Jewish ancestry.

She appeared in more than fifty Egyptian films, including well-known titles of the time such as “Dellouni Ya Nas” (“Show Me the Way, People”), “Men Ayn Laka Hada” (“Where Did You Get This?”), “Zaman Al 3agayeb” and “Al Hob fi Khatar” (“Love in Danger”). Little biographical information survives, but the many clips of her film performances allow us to appreciate her artistry and versatility.

Kitty's flexibility, clear yet simple movements that followed the music closely, and joyful expression made her a remarkable performer. During her extensive film career, she sometimes sang as well as danced.

She also ventured into a modern dance number with Khristo Kladax, a dancer and choreographer who was well known at the time.

She is believed to have left Egypt quietly, under uncertain circumstances. Little, if anything, was heard of her afterwards.
